Tiny Breast Cancer Awareness Doll

Still being in a doll frame of mind, yesterday I decided to make a set of Matryoshka Dolls, or stacking dolls. While these are typically made from wood, they can also be made from fabric and can be stackable or not. I had planned to experiment and make a set of 5 stacking dolls. Until I found this fabric and a whole other idea was formed.

Why not, I thought, make one Breast Cancer Awareness doll. Her size would make her good to use as a Christmas tree ornament. She would make a nice gift to give to somebody who has Breast Cancer, I'm thinking she could be brought along to the hospital, to treatment sessions..something to hold on to. Just a little something to carry along from folks who care about you.

"Pearl" named after my Great Grandmother who was lost to Breast Cancer long before I was born.
5" tall, 2" wide
If interested in purchasing one for somebody or yourself, I'd like to add that Pearl can be customized, as far as skin, hair, kerchief, and shirt go.
50% of all sales will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation

I worked on Pearl off and on throughout  the day yesterday, making a couple mistakes along the way which slowed me down. I'd like to share them with you as tips on what NOT to do!

What not to do tip #1: When making a pattern for pieces that will go on after the main item is  sewn..always remember to figure in the seam allowance!
Yes I know it is very obvious. What I did was proceed merrily along drawing out the whole thing, body, face, hair, etc without a though to seam allowance, even cut everything out too. Naturally once the body was sewn and stuffed everything else was much too big :-)

What not to do tip #2: If the face of the doll you're making is the size of a quarter, rethink using colored pencils to draw it on with! I managed to do it but it wasn't easy and it didn't come out quite as good as I had hoped, although I like it, she looks a little sad..well to me she does. Also if you can't get your black pencil sharp enough to make the pupil..don't use a Sharpie, no matter how fine a tip it has! And finally, don't forget to spray fixative on the face BEFORE the item is complete.

Other than those two things I am pretty happy with the way Pearl turned out.
